City of God : Mis-en-scene
How does the Film Form throughout the film represent the key messages:
How is decline and deterioration shown in the film through the Mis-en-scene?
-In the opening part of City Of God we see a comparison between the old favela and the new favela as we see the society decline through the generations. In the first scene of the film we see the new favela under Lil Ze's regime. The city is run down and deteriorated which is shown through the mis-en-scene. The sign in the City of God is a key visual icon that signifies the decline of the slum. In the old slum the sign was new and clean. Surrounding it was the houses and the sky. This changes throughout the generation as in the modern day favela the sign is run down and deteriorated. It is surrounded by rubbish and run down buildings. This metaphor represents the generational decline. The colour in the sixties is warm and bright. This shows how everyone in the favela is peaceful and can live without fear. The only threat is from the Tender Trio however there crimes help the poor. This contrasts with the favela in the early eighties as the colours are cold and grey. This shows the change in mood as the innocent are in danger under Lil Ze's control.
Another key visual element that we see is the deterioration of education. At the start of the story in the sixties we see rocket and his friend attend school. However when the runts take over there is no sign of education. This shows how the slum has deteriorated into a criminal city as the only way of life the new generations know is this.
The gangs throughout the generations also change their way of life. In the early stages of the City of God the Tender Trio commit crimes such as theft however these crimes benefit the poor. We see this during the hold up of the gas van. Goose, Shaggy and Clipper take the money and give it to their struggling families. They then encourage the families in the favelas to take the gas for free. Under Little Ze's regimes he is blood thirsty and has a thrive to kill. He realises that drugs and violence is the trade and business to be in however it only benefits him. He kills the innocent and the favela becomes run down and deprived. As the generations progress the favelas become more deprived and more corrupt. When we see the runts take over in the final scene of the film we hear them creating a hit list. The reasons they have for killing become petty and we see them planning to kill innocent people and foreshadows the favela becoming even worse.
What are the main connotations behind the montage of shots which show Lil Dice become Lil Ze?
Montage- A technique in film editing in which a series of short shots are edited into a sequence to condense space, time, and information.
In the montage we see Lil Dice become Lil Ze. He is bloodthirsty and thrives to kill even from a young age in the motel scene. His reaction to murder is that he finds it entertaining and amusing which is shocking for the viewers. His laugh when killing shows he is heartless and the people he kills are innocent. We see Lil Dice and Benny start out as thefts in which they become wealthy. Lil Dice then kills one of the Tender Trio. The Tender Trio were the most respected people in the Favela and Lil Dice has no hesitation when killing Goose. On Lil Ze's 18th birthday we see his future rivals wishing happy birthday. This shows how his corruption and thrive to kill over powers his friendships with other people in the favela. In every scene we see Lil Ze kill it is filmed from a low angle. This shows his authority and power over his victims. The montage is supposed to show the highlights of someones life. However all we see is Lil Ze killing and thieving. This shows he has been brought up in a life of crime. At the end of the montage we see him in a ceremony with a man who gives a speech about the devil. After this Lil Ze forgets his friendships and turns to the life of drugs. Most of the scenes are filmed at night which reflect his dark personality and his thrive to kill. Night has connotations of evil, sinister and shows how he kills at night as he has to fulfil his thrive to kill.
