Essay (COG and DBATB)

With close reference to the films you studied, explore how either editing , cinematography or sound create meaning. (40) Cinematography is the term used to describe camera work and editing in films. In Both City of God and Diving Bell and the Butterfly cinematography is used to create meaning. In The Diving Bell and the Butterfly the cinematography in the shaving scene in Papinou's apartment contributes to the meaning in the film. The scene takes place before Jean Do's accident. The camera in the scene is hand held to follow his frantic movements whilst shaving his father. His rapid movement and eagerness to get the job done fast shows his fast paced life and doesn't have quality time with his father. This is juxtaposed with the following scene on the beach as the camera is static and everything moves apart from Jean Do.  This portrays his changing lifestyle as he lived a chaotic and face paced life compared to after his accident where he becomes immobile which is ...

Cinematography and editing in City of God and Diving Bell and the Butterfly: Camerawork and lighting. Space and pace. 1.) Diving Bell and the Butterfly.  The use of the camera in the shaving scene and the fathers day scene, How is meaning created? - The handheld camera in papinou's apartment shows the frantic movement of JeanDo and how he lives fast paced and doesn't have quality time to spend with his father. This juxtaposes with the following scene as the camera on the beach is static. This portrays his changing lifestyle as he lived a chaotic and face paced life compared to after his accident where he becomes immobile which is represented through the static camera. Outline two examples of diegetic and non diegetic sound used in the film: Diegetic - Gunshots, Music at Benny's leaving party (kung fu fighting), Knife sharpening. Non diegetic - Voice over, music.  Diegetic sound: What is the significance of the use of first person voiceover? How does this add to the authenticity of the film? - The film is based on a true story and the voiceover adds truth to the film as he is from the City of God. No reporters had ever been able to enter the City so the voiceover from an insider allows us to see what really happens. The voiceover is in the first person which shows us that the character narrating it has first hand experience on what happens. In the film Rocket is a photographer/ documenter. These jobs rely on accuracy and capturing the reality of what happens.
