Captain Fantastic and Inception essay

Essay: Explore how far spectators respond in the same way to a film. Illustrate your answer by close reference to your chosen film: Spectatorship theory is how individuals consume, engage and respond to a film and the factors that influence this response. This essay will explore how the film evokes different responses from individuals and what factors effect their response. In the opening sequence of Captain Fantastic film-makers use a range of key and structural elements in order to evoke certain responses from the spectators. In the opening scene of the film we see what looks like a tribe coated in mud and camouflage brutally kill an animal with a knife and their bare hands. The close up camera angles and point of view shots allow us as spectators to view the killing from a first hand point of view as if we are actually part of the tribe. This could evoke a response of shock and outrage from some spectators as the youngest member of the 'tribe' is only 6 years of age. Sp...

Responses and comparison

Responses and comparison: 1.) What techniques do both film-makers employ to try and create emotional responses in the films and outline what these emotional responses are? -In both films the film-makers have used Mis-en-scene to create an emotional response for the audience. One example of this is in the first five minutes of captain fantastic the spectators could have an emotional response of shock and outrage. This is because we see the brutal killing of the animal. The children are coated in camouflage and use knifes and arrows to kill their prey. This creates a more significant response for us as spectators as the killing is brutal and shocking whereas if it was just a typical man shooting an animal from a distance it would not be as effective. The costumes the family wear also helps create and emotional response for the spectators as they may be shocked by the cruel nature of the children. They are coated in mud and camouflage which suggests they are aggressive hunters. This c...

Vertigo opening scene

Vertigo: 1.) The opening scene poses a number of enigmas. Give an example of two: One enigma in the opening scene of Vertigo is 'who is the man on the edge of the building?' This is because it isn't clear to us at this point if the man is a detective working for the police, and if so why is he chasing the criminal. Will this be an important event in the film? Another question the audience may ask is if the man survives? This is because at the end of the scene it doesn't show the outcome of what happens to the detective so it could lead the audience to question how he got out of the situation. 2.) What is the purpose of the opening sequence? The opening scene of Vertigo shows Scottie moments away from death. He is overcome by fear and letting go seems the only way out of the situation. In some ways Madeline can be seen as Scottie's foil as she is attracted to suicide and death however she also at the same time fears death so can be seen as similar to Scottie. ...

Captain Fantastic Capitalism

Captain Fantastic: What does the film have to say about capitalism? - The film Captain Fantastic shows different opinions on capitalism through the characters such as       Ben, Jack and the children. In the beginning of the film Ben is completely against Capitalism and       raises his children in isolation in the wild. His 6 children are all used to their way of life however his   most rebellious son 'Rellian' is more adapted to the 'normal' American society and has hatred               towards his father because of the way he has raised them. Jack on the other hand can be seen as a       foil to Ben as he has different views on the way his grand children should be raised. A key point in     the film is when the family travel on the bus past famous shops such as k-mart and macdonalds. Outline how Ben and Jack both love the children but in their own different ways, and how both the men ...
