City of God : Mis-en-scene

How does the Film Form throughout the film represent the key messages: How is decline and deterioration shown in the film through the Mis-en-scene? -In the opening part of City Of God we see a comparison between the old favela and the new favela as we see the society decline through the generations. In the first scene of the film we see the new favela under Lil Ze's regime. The city is run down and deteriorated which is shown through the mis-en-scene. The sign in the City of God is a key visual icon that signifies the decline of the slum. In the old slum the sign was new and clean. Surrounding it was the houses and the sky. This changes throughout the generation as in the modern day favela the sign is run down and deteriorated. It is surrounded by rubbish and run down buildings. This metaphor represents the generational decline. The colour in the sixties is warm and bright. This shows how everyone in the favela is peaceful and can live without fear.
