- The opening scene of This is England establishes the era that the film is set in and what the society was like. It establishes the time that the film is in and shows the political opinions and views that British people had. It shows key events that happened in Britain during the 80's. It also establishes the skinhead culture that the film explores. It also shows the significant event of the Falklands war which cause political debates on whether it was right.

- The film opens with clips of Thatcher, this shows her importance and controversial status in society. Combo can be seen as the most racist character in the film and his Sub culture of skinheads portrays them in a negative way. The graffiti on the wall shows the rebellion against Thatcherism and this is also shown when they throw away the England flag.
