Vertigo and OFOTCN Auteur
Compare how far your chosen films reflect the auteur signature features of their filmmakers. (40) :
Auteur signature features of the film makers are the recognisable features of a film that allow the audience to understand which director is in charge of creating the film. The two films I have chosen are 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' and 'Vertigo'.
In the Film 'Vertigo' the film maker Alfred Hitchcock can recognized by his auteur style. One common feature that runs throughout Hitchcock's films are his cameo appearances.
This is when he plays a small background character. This allows the spectator to understand he is the creator of the film as he repeatedly makes an appearance in most of his films. This allows Hitch cock to mark his own territory so we understand he is the director and writer. Another theme/ occurrence in Hitchcock's films is that staircases and birds are common items carried through his films. The staircase in Vertigo shows Scotties fears and he has to overcome these in order to save Madeline and Judy.
Furthermore Hitchcock throughout the film Vertigo uses the colour green repeatedly. This colour has connotations of jealousy and envy. The green colour is used through the use of lighting and costume. It is worn by Madeline and Judy which shows the jealousy of Scottie. Madeline and Judy also conform to the typical women characters that Hitchcock uses in his films. One of his Auteur features is that there is a powered yet flawed female. Madeline conforms to this stereotype of woman that he carries throughout his films. The powerful women also come into contact with a flawed male.
In the film 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest' the Czech director Milos Forman may be recognised for his Auteur features in his film. His films are often true to that of his Czech Republican roots as lots of his styles remain similar to that of his homeland where he first entered the industry. His mother and father were taken into concentration camps in Nazi Germany. This theme can be seen in the film 'OFOTCN' as the men are kept inside the mental hospital and locked in with barbed wire and fencing.
Jack Nicholson's performance also contributes to the success of the film and the auteur style. Nicholson's has been cast in numerous films all in which he fulfils the role of the electric, happy male character. This therefore is more significant rather than the auteur style of the director.

Your essay contains some good detail Aimee, but lacks structure. You need a conclusion at the end of the essay, and you need to summarise the main points in it. You could go into more detail about the body of Jack Nicholson's work and the other roles he has played which suggest that he brings something to the film as an auteur- his character which he has built up and played in a number of films.
ReplyDeleteReply to this post with some further detail of Jack Nicholson's career which you can use as evidence for his style being applied to this film.
Jack Nicholson's performance also contributes to the success of the film and the auteur style in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Nicholson has been cast in numerous films all in which he fulfils the role of the electric, happy male character. this therefore could be seen in some ways to be more significant rather than the auteur style of the director as his presence and performance allow the spectator to sympathise with McMurphy as he is full of life yet trapped inside the hospital. Milos Forman is known for using rebellious male characters in his films such as McMurphy who tries to impose life and happiness on all the other patients despite being controlled by Nurse Ratched. The rebellious male characters also show through in some of his other films such as 'Man on the Moon' and 'Amadeus'. The character Nurse Ratched is also linked to his experiences with the Nazi's. She in the film strips the males of their identity's and personalities. This reflects how the Nazi regime took away the lives of many citizens.
